From SGML to HTML with help from TEX

چکیده

At this time there is still no fast and standard way of presenting mathematics in HTML pages. Various ideas have been tested and the W3C has just released a draft math markup proposal. When combined with freely available fonts containing the required mathematical characters, we can see much potential for the future. For now it seems that there is only one common denominator suitable for quickly browsing HTML with lots of math: preprocess the mathematics into images and embed links in the HTML that call in the images. The following describes work at AIP in converting physics research articles from SGML to HTML, creating the needed images for math. This allows us to present abstracts or full articles on the web. The tools used are TEX, AMS-LATEX, dvips, Image Alchemy (for image processing), various PostScript (PS) fonts, gcc, and perl.

Active TEX and the DOT Input Syntax

The usual category codes give TEX its familiar backslash and braces input syntax. With Active TEX, all characters are active. This gives the macro programmer complete freedom in defining the input syntax. It also provides a powerful programming environment. The DOT input syntax, like TROFF, uses a period at the start of the line as an escape character. However, its underlying element, attribute...

HTML & TEX : Making them sweat

HTML is often criticised for its presentation-oriented conception. But it does contain sufficient structural information for many everyday purposes and this has led to its development into a more stable form. Future platforms for the World Wide Web may support other applications of SGML, and the present climate of popularity of the Web is a suitable opportunity for consolidation of the more sta...

The Association of American Publishers (aap) Refe- Rence Manual on Electronic Manuscript Preparation and Markup Defines a Document As: Lifecycle-phases of Documents

What SGML (and TEX) is all about is given in a nutshell. Markup of example document elements, by SGML and LATEX, are provided. Coupling SGML to TEX is considered by direct translation and by the intermediate procedural markup phase. Interfacing SGML to (La)TEX is also addressed. Some guidelines are provided in order to decide when SGML, or TEX (alone, both, or neither) might be beneficial. It i...

Another Look at L A TEX to SGML Conversion

Publishers are starting to use SGML as their permanent form of storage for documents. How can LTEX files be converted to an SGML instance? This paper discusses possible strategies, and describes an implementation by Elsevier Science of a system based on conversion in TEX itself, and extraction of SGML code from the dvi file.
